In 1872, Simon Tissot-Dupont moved to Paris from his native French Alps to found what would become on of France’s finest leather goods manufacturers, producing luxury leather document cases. It was on the rue Dieu that Monsieur Tissot-Dupont established, along with his two sons, their workshops and showroom.
In 1935, the Tissot-Dupont brothers hired a Russian lacquerer and S.T.Dupont became a custodian of a closely guarded secret: the process of applying the Chinese lacquer to metal. At the request of the Maharaja of Patiala, S.T. Dupont created the first luxury petrol lighter as an accessory for the traveling case ordered by His Majesty.It was later, in 1941 that the brand chose to commercialize the lighter as an alternative to the traveling cases which had become difficult to produce during the Second World War.
In 1952, S.T. Dupont launched another innovation and quickly became a veritable symbol of French Luxury: The first Gas Luxury Lighter. In 1973, brand broth its innovative talents to bear with the creation of the first luxury ball point pen, which was made of solid gold inspired by a special request made by Mrs. Jackie Kennedy. This svelte and elegant model, now known as “The Classique” incorporated the very best of S.T. In 2011, S.T. Dupont reconfirmed its role as royal purveyor with order made by the French President for a writing case as a wedding gift for Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Chinese Lacquer
Authentic Chinese lacquer comes from the sap of trees from South Asia. S.T. Dupont carefully chooses resins in Japan and Taiwan which have the requirement of a great lacquer. When the sap arrives in S.T. Dupont workshops it is transformed by a traditional process into Chinese lacquer.Then the subtract has to be provided, firstly by hollowing out the metal surface which will then be mechanically and chemically prepared.
The lacquer is applied in several layers (up to ten), after drying each layer is smoothed with charcoal and then polished. Chinese lacquer is living material that is resistant to handling and difficult to work with. All lacquer products are adorned with the authentic Chinese lacquer hallmark, the image of a leaf of the Rhus vernicifera tree.
